What is literacy? Literacy to me is the ability to read and write. Also to be able to talk in a proper way. I use literacy on a daily basis whether it is for talking to my friends or reading a book. I also use literacy to take notes. The roots of literacy were planted when I was a little girl. It was planted at my house. My mom is a teacher so she made me read or she read to me when I was too young to read myself.
When I was in kindergarten my mom influenced me to start reading. She read to me when I couldn’t read. The first book I read myself had to be a book my mom and step dad had written and published for me. The book they had written was a twist on one of my favorite fairy tale. Alice in Wonderland. That and Cinderella were the fairy tales I read the most.
The elementary school I went to was Blackwood Elementary School. When I was in elementary school some books that sparked my interest were The Amazing Days of Abby Hayes and Junie B. Jones. In away my mom was the first person to get me to read but after a while it was just something I did because I liked it.
The middle school I went to was Charles W. Lewis Middle School. In middle school some of my favorite authors were Caroline B. Cooney, Shakespeare, Jodi Picoult, L.J. Smith, and Darren Shan. The genres that I liked to read didn’t change. I still liked to read the same books throughout middle school. Though I did broaden what I read.
In high school I hope to read more books that challenge me as a reader. Also to read books that are based on what I like to read. I tend to read books about the supernatural and the type of books Lurlene McDaniel writes. I am a literate person in the way that I can read and write and know how to use words in certain ways.
My feelings on reading are that I like to read but I have to like the book and be able to read it on my own. I’m currently reading a series called The Morganville Vampires and The Sookie Stackhouse series. I think literacy is important because it helps people get jobs and get into college. Literacy has helped my life because it has helped me get an education and get as far in life as I am now. Literacy is like a tree in the way that as you grow what you learn with literacy grows with you and branches out.
